Taking payment — cash, card, split payments and change

Use Multiple Pay to split a bill between methods, record the amount tendered and give the right change.

Quick payments

Cash and Card at the bottom of the POS record the full total in one tap. Use them when the customer pays the exact total with one method.

Multiple Pay

Use Multiple Pay when you need to:

  • record the amount tendered and show the change to give back;
  • split a bill, for example part cash, part M-Pesa;
  • take a partial payment, where the balance stays as an amount due.

Step by step

  1. Add the products and click Multiple Pay.
  2. In the first payment row, choose the Payment Method and enter the Amount the customer gives you.
  3. To split, click Add Payment Row and enter the next method and amount.
  4. For card, cheque or bank transfer, fill in the reference fields (card number, cheque no., transaction no.) if you need them for reconciliation.
  5. The right-hand panel shows Total Payable, Total Paying, Change Return and Balance.
  6. Click Finalize Payment.

Tip: If the customer pays less than the total, the remaining Balance is saved as due on the sale. Choose a named customer (not Walk-In) so you can follow up. See Customer balances.

Which methods appear?

Each location shows only the payment methods turned on for it under Settings › Business Locations › Edit › Payment options. You can rename the spare "Custom Payment" methods, for example to M-Pesa or Equitel. See Payment methods.
